DNA testing is the most reliable way to determine the sex of mono-morphic bird species. We use cutting edge molecular biology techniques and provide free sample collection kits.
In birds, two chromosomes (W and Z) determine sex. Females carry one of each (ZW), while males carry two Z chromosomes (ZZ). Using state-of-the-art genetic technology, we analyse for the presence of Z and W sex chromosomes in your birds, identifying them as male or female by their DNA.
What species can you test?
We can test for a range of species of birds, falcons, owls and parrots. For example, Kites, Kestrals, Harris Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, Ravens, Song Thrushes, Gyrfalcons, Goshawks, Golden Eagles, Chickens, Bonellis Eagles and Bald Eagles.
If we have not tested your species of bird before that is not a problem, if you have a known female of the same species we can validate the sexing of this species in our lab and will do so free of charge!

What kind of samples do you need?
The following sample types are preferred:
- Egg membrane: We recommend sending a dry egg membrane with bloody areas or veins. Please avoid wet membrane or crushed shell.
- Feathers: We ideally would like to be sent 3 plucked feathers. These feathers must be plucked as they must have the root attached for us to process the bird’s DNA.
Please take great care when taking samples. If you are sending us more than 1 sample, please wash your hand and sanitise any equipment you are using (e.g scissors/tweezers) between samples to avoid contamination.
Full instructions for sampling is included in the test kit.
Once you have taken the samples, please return to us as soon as possible using the returns envelope provided. Please note, the customer is responsible for the cost of postage to return the samples back to the lab.
Our returns address is:
